ALL WE HUNGERED FOR
Check out this prose:
"I was born in March, with the hope of spring coming and the reality of gritty gray sludge on the roads and tree lawns. My parents were nonchalant when they saw my sex, me being their fifth child, yet another girl. They abandoned the name Greg there in the delivery room, took four days to come up with Marti, with an 'i', for me. In the interim, my soul hunkered down in the cold wind while my mouth went searching for the nipple and the goods."
The creativity of this poet virtually jumps off the page at you with every new insight. As Clive Matson, author of Squish Boots and Let the Crazy Child Write! says, "Read Cathy Barber's ALL WE HUNGERED FOR and be surprised by the raw, abraded world under the careful veneer of our lives. The language is simple, powerful, and driven by a mind seeking to understand and record. The journey is toward empowerment. The poet may not say anything your body doesn't already know but it's likely to have been buried a long time. In one poem a tender and gnarly figure emerges from a background of 'neglected femininity with a pretty heavy undertow.' Watch your step."
This is a powerful composite of twenty of Cathy's works to savor and enjoy. This artistic endeavor does indeed provide what we hunger for. We are proud to present this book of small miracles through Arts That Work. Cover design by Jane McCreary.
